In this article, we are creating a checklist of all the basic but essential tasks which should be done and tested before launching any new website.

1. Loading time. It should be optimal. Check everything from video, flash, image to html, css, javascript.

2. Favicon. It shows on the left side of the url in browser window. It plays a important role in branding. Code for favicon:

3. Website Title. It’s the first thing that shows on the top of a browser window. It is important from SEO point of view also. Code for Title:
This Is My Website Title

4. Meta tags. Search engines take their data from meta tags. So they play a crucial role in SEO. Code for Meta tags: <meta name=”description” content=”this is my meta description” />

5. Proofread all the content. Always double check the content. Make sure that everything is correct including spelling, grammar and punctuation.

6. Links. You can use this http://validator.w3.org/checklink to check if your website has any broken link.

7. Forms. Test contact/order or any other form(s) you have on the website. User should get proper feedback upon successful/failed submission of the form.

8. Email Address. All the email addresses provided within the site must be created already.

9. Copyright statement. Always double check the copyright statement.

10. Analytics. To measure success of your website and to see if it is meeting the expected goal, check the detailed behavior of users. It is mandatory to have some analytical application installed on the website. Common analytics tool are google analytics, Clicky, Mint and stat counter.

11. Sitemap. This helps a lot from SEO point of view. You should also submit the sitemap to Yahoo,Google and MSN/Bing. Sitemap also helps a user find the right page.

12. W3C validation. To make standard compliant website, I always validate my markup and CSS on w3C.
http://validator.w3.org/ – Validating markup
http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ – Validating CSS

13. Cross browser compatibility. Just to ensure that website is accessible across all major browsers I check my websites on Internet explorer 6/7/8, Firefox, Safari, Opera and chrome. To get more information, please visit our other article 10 helpful resources for cross browser testing.

14. Cross operating system compatibility. I always check my website on Mac, linux and windows.

15. Downtime & Server Speed. Downtime and slow server speed not only adversely effect the search engine ranking but also create a negative impact on visitors. Investment in fast and reliable hosting is always worthwhile.

Another quiet Sunday in the blogosphere, as usual. This morning I thought about writing another link share post or a WordPress theme recommendation, but later I’ve decided to break the pattern (since it’s all so quiet) and make Sundays the host of a blog SEO tips series. In this first post I’m going to talk about the importance of using SEO friendly titles (H1, H2, H3) and the right way to do so.

Usual Coding Patterns in WordPress Themes

download Kicking & Screaming

If you’re even a bit familiar with the WordPress themes, by now you’ve probably took a look at your theme’s files. Blog pages are rendered through an association of a few PHP files with standard names (index.php, archive.php, single.php) with different templates of the theme, based on the content type.

The index.php file usually stands for your home page, also being capable of replacing any other template that hasn’t been already defined. So, if you don’t have a template for search results (search.php), the index file will take over and render your search results page.

Each of these templates includes smaller pieces of code to build up the final result. The most used are header.php, sidebar.php and footer.php.

For now, we’ll limit our attention to the following files in your theme’s folder:

header.php

index.php

single.php

page.php (not every theme has it)

archive.php, search.php (not every theme has them)

Optimizing the Header File

Having your primary keyword present at the top of you page it’s very important.
Considering the fact that most themes come with text based logos instead of graphics, we’ll be looking for the
tag in the header.php file.

If you look at the WordPress default theme will find this piece of code, close to the end of the file:

<a href="<?php echo get_option('home'); ?>/"><?php bloginfo('name'); ?>

<?php bloginfo('description'); ?>

download Monster House
The first line displays your blog’s title into a link to the homepage, inside the H1 tag.
The second line displays your blog’s description.

H1 is the most important heading style and the coding recommendations state that only one should be used per page. When talking about a homepage, archive page or search results, it’s best that we optimize these pages according to our main keywords, therefore this H1 tag is required.

But what about on the single post pages? When we display single post, we would want to have their pages optimized according to their content, not the overall keywords of the blog. This is where the H1 should be removed from the header.php file, and placed instead of the H2 surrounding the posts title, to give make it more visible and representative in the eyes of a search engine spider.

How do we do that? First we need to add some conditional tags in the header.
Look for the piece of code that I’ve listed above and replace it with this one:

<?php if(is_single() OR is_page()) {
// On single post pages and static pages we use this code
?>

<a href="<?php echo get_option('home'); ?>/"><?php bloginfo('name'); ?>

<?php bloginfo('description'); ?>

<?php }
else {
// On home page and archive style pages we use this code
?>

<a href="<?php echo get_option('home'); ?>/"><?php bloginfo('name'); ?>

<?php bloginfo('description'); ?>

<?php } ?>

By using some WordPress conditional tags we managed to limit the use of the H1 HTML tag to all archive style pages (including the homepage).

Next, we move to single posts and static pages to continue our optimization.

Optimizing the Single Posts and Static Pages

After we’ve made the changes in the header file, we need to apply some modifications to the single.php and page.php files to make their titles more search engine friendly.

Open the default theme’s single.php file and look for this piece of code:

<a href="<?php echo get_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark"
title="Permanent Link: <?php the_title_attribute(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?>

Remember that I’ve told you we are allowed to used
only once per file, for our most important title / phrase. Since we’ve eliminated the use of
on single posts and static pages in the header.php, now, all we have to do is to change
and
with
and
, just like this:

<a href="<?php echo get_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark"
title="Permanent Link: <?php the_title_attribute(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?>

There you go, now your most important phrase on a single post page is the post’s title, as it should be!
Most themes don’t come with this type of heading importance separation and by following this guide you’ll be able to fix this issue on your own with no trouble at all.

While the default theme does not have a page.php template defined, you could clone the single.php file and rename it. If you don’t clone it, the index.php file will be used to display static pages, which means you’ll list page titles using the
instead of
.

Consider Using Subheadings in Your Posts

download Asterix Versus Caesar

For further SEO improvement, you should consider using relevant subheadings inside your post to evidentiate different parts of your post’s structure.
Write down your article and when you’re finished, switch to HTML view and add
&
around you subheadings, like this:

This Is a Subheading

Final Thoughts

Usually, titles are the most important links on your blog. Through them, users and spiders alike navigate through your content. Use them smart and effectively.
If you have any questions or need further help with this, feel free to drop a comment.
Also, join me again next Sunday for a new post in the Blog Seo Tips series.

The good news is that the default installation of WordPress is already generally search engine friendly. If you wish, there are a few additional steps that you can take to improve that search engine readiness, while at the same time protecting your site’s search engine visibility for the future.

Keywords and Post Titles in the Permalink or Link Structure
The default installation of WordPress uses URLs like www.example.com/?p=1234 to point to your individual blog articles. While this works fine for modern search engines, changing the default so that your links look like www.example.com/category/title-of-post has a few additional benefits.

1.When your post title and category names are represented in your URLs or permalinks, the words that you use for your categories and titles automatically become keywords that the search engines can index every time someone links to you.

When you put configure WordPress to place your category name and post title as part of your URL, even such links contain your title and keywords embedded in the URLs. As mentioned in one of my Google articles, Google takes into account the words given in the anchor text to determine if your page is relevant for any given search engine query. Admittedly, the help given in the anchor text is probably not enormous, but having it is better than the cryptic www.example.com/?p=1234 URL which neither gives keyword help to search engines nor describe your article adequately for human beings.

2.The lengthy text-based names for individual blog pages also help in making your blog future-proof. At this time, since you’re reading this article, you are probably using WordPress as your blog software. But who can say what will happen in the future? You may find another blogging tool that you prefer. If you leave your URLs in the form of www.example.com/?p=1234, how will you maintain such a script-specific URL? The new software may assign another number to your blog entries when you import your existing blog database. This results in the URLs of your pages changing.

Changing URLs has enormous search engine ramifications. All the links from external sites that currently point to those pages will be instantly broken, and along with it, the “reputation” of that page in the eyes of the search engine. Sure, you can work around it with some mod_rewrite voodoo, but I personally prefer to pre-empt the problem by configuring WordPress to use page titles as the permalinks.

When you make your article page URLs appear as straightforward category-and-page-title URLs, if you ever change blog software, and find that you cannot configure the new software to create identical URLs, you can simply save all your old posts as ordinary static web pages using those exact filenames. The links to your old pages will then work without modification.

How to Put Your Post Titles into Your URLs in WordPress

WordPress makes it easy for you to change your URLs, a.k.a. permalinks.

1.

Log into your WordPress blog.
2.

Click “Options”. It’s near the top of the screen.
3.

Click “Permalinks”. It’s just below the line that says “Dashboard Write Manage…” (etc).
4.

Before you change anything, make sure that you don’t have a category that conflicts with one of WordPress’ scripts or directory names. For example, check to see that you don’t have a category by the name of wp-admin. If you do, you should change your category names first before proceeding.

Scroll down to the “Common options” section and select “Custom, specify below”. In the box below, type “/%category%/%postname%/” without the opening and closing inverted commas (quotes). Click “Update Permalink Structure”.
5.

You should see a message that says, “Permalink structure updated”. If you get a message that says something like “If this file were writable you could edit it” together with a box showing you the contents of a .htaccess file, it means that your web host configured PHP so that it could not write to your web directories.

One way to solve this is to copy the suggested .htaccess contents into an ASCII text editor like Notepad (on Windows), and save it as “.htaccess” (including the quotes if you are using Notepad on Windows). Then upload the file into your blog directory.
6.

You can now view your blog and check the individual post pages to see your new site structure.

Post Titles in the TITLE Tag

One of the recommendations in the article on How to Create a Search Engine Friendly Website is to make sure that your HTML title tags contain meaningful and relevant text. The HTML title tags in WordPress is created automatically from your post titles. In the default template, the blogging software appends your post title to the name of your blog and the words “Blog Archive”, so that if your blog is called “XYZ Blog” and your post is called “How to Improve WordPress Search Engine Readiness”, you get a title tag with the words “XYZ Blog » Blog Archive » How to Improve WordPress Search Engine Readiness”.

While this is better than not having your post titles in the TITLE tag, the ideal is to have a title like “How to Improve WordPress Search Engine Readiness”. That is, having your post title at the start of your TITLE tag is preferable, since this is the description that will be displayed in search engine results listing your site. You want your post title to be first in the description in this case because you want the user to immediately realize the relevance of your post to their query. Having the name of your blog as well as the word “Blog Archive” first in the post title is an unnecessary distraction.
How to Modify the Default Template to Place Post Titles First

1.

Log into your WordPress account and click “Presentation”.
2.

Click the “Theme Editor” link.
3.

Look at the right hand side of your browser window to locate the “Header” link, and click on it.
4.

The browser should now display “Editing header.php”. Somewhere in the box below this, locate the line that says

<?php bloginfo(’name’); ?> <?php if ( is_single() ) { ?> » Blog Archive <?php } ?> <?php wp_title(); ?>

Change it to the following:

<?php wp_title(); ?>

If you want to have the name of your blog at the end in the title, change it to the following instead:

<?php wp_title(); ?> – <?php bloginfo(’name’); ?>

Note: if you have trouble cutting and pasting the code above, it probably means you are using Internet Explorer 6. Try using a different browser for this purpose, like Firefox or Opera.
5.

Click the “Update File” button when you are through. You should receive the message “File edited successfully”.

If you receive a message “If this file were writable you could edit it”, it means that your web host has configured PHP so that it cannot write to your web directory. Copy and paste the contents of the file to an ASCII text editor as before, save it as “header.php” (including the quotes if you are using Notepad on Windows) and upload it to your themes directory. If you are using the default theme, this should be in the “wp-content/themes/default” folder. Overwrite the existing header.php file.

In a bid to provide quality websites to our clients we started to look for various ways to make websites code Search Engine Friendly.

Here are some tips on how to make a website be search-engine friendly:

1] Validation of HTML and CSS Code:
One of the main reasons why a website needs to validate its HTML and CSS Code is for its search-engine visibility. Every web page should comply with the standard set by the W3 Consortium, an organization that issues the HTML standards to ensure that it’s free of errors.

While search engines don’t care if the HTML code is free from errors, they depend on the precision of the code to determine which portions of a webpage should be indexed. Basically, if a website has errors on its code, it’s possible that some portions of a web page can only be included in the search engine’s database. The unseen errors in a web browser may confuse the search engine software to think that they are just a part of the HTML formatting information rather than a site’s content. This may lead search engine to ignore that text and that web page will not be displayed in search engine result page.

2. Proper Navigation and Structure of Links & sitemap
Having a proper navigation of links is also an important. As much as possible, all inner pages should be no more than three clicks away from its home page so that search engines will easily crawl these subpages and spider the information they are looking for.

Creating a sitemap is also a significant part of SEO to easily index and crawl all its inner pages. This does not just help visitors to find the pages they need but also help search bots to boost the crawling speed of documents at a website. So it’s crucial to ensure that the sitemap has no broken links so that all the site’s pages will be accessible and visible to search engines.

3. Creating Relevant Title Tags
Title Tags are one of the most important factors in Search Engine Optimization. These tags are those non-visible text in the HTML Code that are displayed in the title bar or browser. The information inside these tags are first seen by search engine spiders and used as part of their algorithm to determine what the webpage is all about.

4. Adding Keywords to Alt Tags
Search engines can’t able to read images so it’s needed to always put some keywords or description on the alt tags. The text on the alt tags are recognizable by search engines so adding some brief descriptions on alt tags will help them know what the images are all about.

5] Less code, clean Code more content
Who would not like a “clean” code? Even people gets dizzy in looking on a “messy” code and so as to crawlers. It is recommended to use another file for formatting and just “call” your CSS file when needed. That way, crawlers can scan your codes and find your keywords on the content faster.

6] No Hidden Link or Text
The most common way on hiding a link or a text is by using a font color similar to the background color. If found to be doing this, search engines will penalize your site and your rankings will drastically affected.

7] No Cloaking Mechanisms
Never serve a unique, optimized page for the search engines and serve a completely different page to real users. This will risk your site on being penalized or worst being banned.

8] Eliminate Apparent Content Duplication

By duplicate content, I mean pages on your website that are identical to other pages on your site. If you manually create your website using a web editor, this will probably never happen. However, some of the automated services mentioned earlier create alternate routes to the same article. For example, a content management system or blogging software may duplicate the same article you wrote under two different URLs, such as www.example.com/archive/article-name.html and www.example.com/2007/01/05/article-name.html. Another manifestation of this is when your software adds a session id to the URL. Since every visitor receives a different session ID, he/she will link to your page using a different URL.

9] Google Sitemap.

It’s worth creating this XML (http://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml) file if you have not already, as it can lead to a larger and more enticing search result for your site’s pages in Google. If you already have a Google Sitemap, be sure to update URLs, priorities, and modified dates so it is accurate after re-launch of your website.

Sitemaps are an easy way for webmasters to inform search engines about pages on their sites that are available for crawling. In its simplest form, a Sitemap is an XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL (when it was last updated, how often it usually changes, and how important it is, relative to other URLs in the site) so that search engines can more intelligently crawl the site.

Web crawlers usually discover pages from links within the site and from other sites. Sitemaps supplement this data to allow crawlers that support Sitemaps to pick up all URLs in the Sitemap and learn about those URLs using the associated metadata. Using the Sitemap protocol does not guarantee that web pages are included in search engines, but provides hints for web crawlers to do a better job of crawling your site.

Sitemap 0.90 is offered under the terms of the Attribution-ShareAlike Creative Commons License and has wide adoption, including support from Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft.

For detail information about sitemap plz visit this site: http://www.sitemaps.org/index.php all information related to sitemap is present there.
